Valter Walker, UFC heavy goods vehicle, says he is a new man – and fighter – thanks to his wife and his Muslim teammates.
Walker moved to Russia to follow his brother Johnny Walker six years ago. When Johnny was already in competition under the lively lights of the UFC, everything he wanted was to party and have fun. When reality struck -and he was beaten in the gymnasium over and over -Walker realized that he had to be more serious if he wanted to build a professional career in mixed martial arts and perhaps a day join his brother in the big leagues.
“I changed water to wine (when I got married),” Walker told MMA Fighting. “I was crazy at the time. I didn’t even trace myself correctly. I tell my wife that she gave me the opportunity to become an athlete. My brother first gave me an opportunity, but I did not have this state of mind. All I wanted was going out with women and partying every weekend. My goal was to connect with women. There was a time when I had six friends.
“You cannot focus (in MMA) by doing this, guy. I met a different woman every day. I wanted to leave the gym to meet women. In the past five years that I have been married, it is the gym-gym at home. And the result is there. I train professionally for six years and I am already at the UFC. Some people have been training for 10 years and have not yet entered the UFC. »»
According to Walker, being surrounded by Muslim athletes from Gor MMA also contributed to his success. Walker won 10 consecutive games in the Russian circuit before winning the Titan FC truck title with a stop on the veteran Alex Nicholson, winning a shot in the UFC in 2024. Training sessions in Russia may include Eyes for the eyes and ear bites when things become too intense and “aggressive” sometimes, he said, but everything is right and a good influence.
“It’s because they are Muslims so that they don’t drink, don’t smoke, don’t go out,” said Walker. “They are a kind of psychopaths. In addition to that, they are very disciplined. They could be exhausted, but they will always train. And I got this discipline from them. I am at the gymnasium all the time. You are the result of those you have around you. I have been here for five years now and those around me have put me on the right track. The brotherhood is the key.
The beginnings of Walker at the UFC were a disappointing demonstration for a man who won 11 in a row with seven finishes, losing a dull decision against Lukasz Brzeski. He celebrates this as a “necessary loss” that woke him up, losing 22 pounds and improving his cardio to bounce back last August with a rapid submission to Junior Tafa.
Walker is going back to action on Saturday, fighting against Dantale Mayes at the UFC Vegas 102, and promises that it will not shoot for withdrawals in the first three minutes of each round to Las Vegas – Si Mayes lasts so long.
“He really expects to get with withdrawals,” said Walker. “Everyone is starting to lead to the defense of withdrawal when they fight me.”
A victory on Saturday represents a step closer to the summit of the division and money in the pocket, an important part of the game for a man who plans to develop the family.
“People think life is easy in Russia,” Walker said. “I have a lot of invoices to pay. I have to win a bonus because I will make another baby and I want to pay the car I bought after the last fight.
“As for alcohol, brother, only after victory,” he added. “I’m going to celebrate after the fight with a little alcohol and celebration, and that’s it, back to the gymnasium that I’m going. I have been doing this for five years and I plan to do it for five years to go after the Grand Prix, to become champion, then it’s back to madness. Once I’m retired, it’s over. Back to madness. Money and stories to tell, cannot miss this. “”
