Toronto Maple Leafs defender Simon Benoit broke the internet on Tuesday evening when he tried a Superman punch during a central ice fight.
With his 3-0 team at the start of the second period, Benoit obtained a challenge from the defender of the Utah Hockey Club Michael Kesselring. The two dropped the gloves and square before Benoit jumps up over the ice with a swing in mid-air to Kesselring.
This decision has generated a criticism of someone who knows the move better than anyone, because the temple of the renown of the UFC, Georges St-Pierre, loved the attempt but which was not impressed by the performance of Benoit.
“Superman Punch in the NHL last night,” wrote Pierre X Tuesday. “He missed the target because he has telegraphed too much but the image is great.”
Despite the puff, Benoit and Kesselring have always launched in a quick and fiery song. Benoit has definitely linked to something – potentially helmet – as he was seen to reset his thumb in the penalty box afterwards.
The Punch Superman in the Monday match at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City was not the first time that the strike was attempted in a NHL match.
The former defender of the Ducks of Anaheim, Kevin Bieksa, won the most famous (and successful) punch Superman in the history of sport to date in a match of October 2017. The blow dropped the defender of the flyers of Philadelphia, Radko Gudas, a coriace himself.
