Las Vegas – When you have been in the MMA game as long as Robbie Lawler, many things are probably second nature.
During a fighting career that lasted almost a quarter of a century as a pro, Lawler undoubtedly helped many of his instincts. Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, seated cages as a guest of the UFC, the promotion for which he was once champion of Welters weights, Lawler suspected that one could wonder.
“I had an idea of that. I just did it, “said Lawler on Saturday after the announcement of his summer enthronement in the modern wing of the UFC renown temple. “I didn’t tell anyone I had an idea. I made my wife known. I say to myself “hey …” and then when I was sitting where I was sitting, I suspected myself). But when this happens, you say to yourself: “Oh – it happens.”
The special announcement of the UFC, accompanied by a video package, played in the arena after the first fight on the main map while Lawler looked for the first time.
Lawler said he had heard adversaries and emotional colleagues like the CEO of the UFC, Dana White, spoke of her impact.
“It was going quite well, but once all these fighters and Dana said these beautiful things about me, I smothered a little,” said Lawler. “I am definitely honored – an incredible achievement. A lot of hard work has been put in it, not only me, but coaches, training partners, a management team … It is only a long road and just another gift.
“Probably the best part is all these kind words of all these fighters and my peers and guys who come now, seeing what I put in sport and how I fought. It really makes me feel good.
Lawler (30-16 MMA, 10-5 UFC) retired after a 38-second victory in July 2023 over Niko Price. It was one of a few protruding facts but just fights for Lawler after losing the Welter weight title against Tyron Woodley in mid-2016.
After that, he beat Donald Cerrone a year later, but then had a skid with four fights with defeats against Rafael Dos Anjos, Ben Askren, Colby Covington and Neil Magny. After an average weight victory over Nick Diaz, he was eliminated by Bryan Barberena in July 2022 before his return a year later to beat Price.
Lawler is already a member of the UFC renown temple in The Fight Wing (Class 2023) for his TKO victory of the UFC 189 on Rory Macdonald, who was a practically universal winner of the fight in 1989.
He said he thought that the door is closed for any type of sporting combat return, but also, like most fighters, has not excluded a return. He was linked to a potential BKFC fight against Mike Perry.
“I don’t close the doors, but they seem to be closed,” he said. “But there are always opportunities there.”
