Unlike his fighter, Eric Nicksick did not hold back.
Nicksick was in Sydney last Saturday to train and stuck Sean Strickland at the main UFC 312 event, which ended with Strickland delivering a failure of a performance on the way to a unanimous decision for the champion of Average weights Dricus du Plessis.
Strickland faced an avalanche of criticism for its apathetic release, in particular following his bravado before the usual fight in which he said he was willing to fight from Plessis to death. Nicksick appeared on Wednesday The Ariel Helwani show To approach criticism, some of which agree.
Was criticism fair?
“We have to be real,” said Nicksick. “It was just a very disappointing performance in an opportunity fight for a title. There are people in this sport that never even realizes that the potential to ever be the opportunity to fight for a championship, it should be enough to motivate you to get you out of the sofa. It’s just for me that he didn’t play.
“It’s all about us. It is on me as coach staff, it is on Sean, and I think he must assess what he wants to do in this sport. If it’s just to earn money, then it’s great, let us know. I want to train world champions, so my motivations are different. I think that the simple fact of presenting yourself and doing it and not really supporting it, for me, it was just a little inspiring. »»
Nicksick welcomes a conversation with Strickland on the future objectives of the former UFC champion and if he is again serious for the title. He also congratulated Strickland for showing up at the gymnasium this week and being a good teammate.
But the fallout from the loss of Strickland will probably be felt for a while and Nicksick is still not exactly sure of what is not going on the evening of the fight.
“It was simply inspired to fight,” said Nicksick. “It just seemed that he is domestic. It was difficult, I was just trying to dig it through the rounds. I did not know if he was trying to collect data at the beginning or if it was just a slow start or what was going on, but as the rounds started to progress, I could just did not feel like being in most of the times it is. It was difficult.
“It was a hard 25 minutes to travel all the way and let’s not forget, it is a fight for the title. I take these title fights very seriously. I was just disappointed. I was disappointed with the whole result, the whole fight as a process, I thought it was just a little flat. »»
Luke Rockhold, another former average weight champion, spoke to Helwani on Monday and he called Strickland “false” for having spoken such a big game and falling if the bell sounded. Although Nicksick does not dispute the hard words that are launched by his fighter, he still thinks that Strickland was not himself at the UFC 312.
“(Rockhold a) Right to say that in this particular fight,” said Nicksick. “I think it’s a large brush to paint after a fight. It was not our night, it was a very flat night, very little inspiring, but I do not think that it is necessarily Sean as a fighter.
“We have seen him in these wars, we know that he is capable of them. So, just to say that “it’s not this guy”, yeah, he was not tonight, that’s for sure. “”

Ok, we had a lot of denigration of Sean Strickland this week, but did anyone expect the call from inside the house? It is his own trainer by wondering publicly if he really wants to fight at the level of the championship. It should hurt, I don’t care the impact of your skin or unconscious criticism.
Again, you have to ask: Eric Nicksick was a bit Also Honest in his assessment of his fighter? Should some conversations be maintained behind closed doors? Or is it a fair game since Strickland himself has a zero filter?
