Paddy Pimbelett is not impressed by the plans of Ilia Topuria to become champion with two divisions. Especially since he has already seen this routine.
The CEO of the UFC, Dana White, recently announced that Topuria Invainu cancels its feathered weight title to move to a light weight, affirming that in addition to topuria targeting a belt in a second weight category, the fighter does not want to reduce to 145 pounds either.
Although Topuria has not yet commented on if he had problems giving featherweight, Pimbett does not understand why he even envisages a jump up to 155 pounds in the first place.
“I thought: ‘Wow, you’re stupid. Why did you go to this division? “, He said Pimbelett Better is better. “He is tiny. It is, as, 5 feet 5 inches, 5 feet 6 inches, I do not understand. He has the audacity to call me big when he says he can no longer make 145 when he says that he can no longer make 145 when he is a dwarf. It just doesn’t make sense.
“I think he ran from 145 to be honest because he knew (Alexander Volkanovski) who did not come out of a direct elimination defeat 12 weeks earlier would give him a much more difficult fight than his first fight with him. And then he also had (Movsar) Evloev and (Diego) fought. I would have had much more respect for Ilia if he would have defended this belt twice more, then I think he could have kept his belt and not to have to leave it and to go up and to fight (light champion Islam makhachev) or anyone on the belt at the time. But I don’t think it deserves a right -up shooting and I don’t think that the UFC either. I think he will have to fight someone in the top 3 if he wants to get a title shot. »»
Pimbett and Topuria have had a long -standing rivalry, including a public song in March 2022 in which Pimblett launched a bottle of hand disinfectant in Topuria. They have not yet crossed the official UFC route, Topuria conquer the featherweight division and Pimbett compiling a record of 6-0 at a light weight.
With Topuria to make her light debut, a future match with Pimbett is more realistic. If this happens, Pimbett hopes that Topuria will be able to intensify her promotional game rather than simply following the traces of another fighter.
“I think it’s the Conor McGregor effect,” said Pimbett. “Everyone wants to be Conor McGregor. Ilia Topuria is the worst for that. He copied his chest tattoo and his back tattoo and all that, he just wants to be Conor McGregor, but you cannot be Conor McGregor when you have the charisma of a box of beans, so that is one of them.
“I think everyone has just copied the McGregor route. I just say that it is much more when you defend your belt several times, like what Volk did, Volk defended his belt about five times or something like that, then he was lucky to go to Islam. I think that (Israel) Adesanya defended her belt at least three times, like (Daniel Cormier). “ DC ‘defended the light heavy belt on several occasions, then moved to fight for the heavyweight belt, but nowadays, the champions speak of going up and fighting people immediately. Belal Muhammad did not even have a title defense and he talks about going up, right? It’s madness.
Pimbett is expected to fight Michael Chandler at UFC 314 on April 12 in Miami. A victory over the former Bellator star would propel Pimbett a step closer to a title shot and that he became champion, he sees a lot of money in a match with McGregor in his hometown of Liverpool, in England.
If he enters the cage with Topuria, it would be a bonus.
“Obviously, everyone wants Conor’s fight, but personally, my plan is to fight a top 5 opponent, then fight for the belt,” said Pimbett. “And then I don’t care who they are so good, to be honest. The top 5 opponent, Fight for the Belt, then my first title defense could be Conor McGregor in Anfield, then it’s perfect, because this is where the money is in Anfield, me and Conor.
“But obviously, I want to beat the disinfectant with the hands. I want to show him how small he is and show him that he has a little man’s syndrome, so it’s another that I would like to fight. “”
